Beautiful grounds and gardens for walking. Great place to bring kids. Often fun activities on such as a maze and in the house a where's Wally style activity. (When we visited it was monkeys hidden in each room. The history has links to the girl guide movement as well as women's golfing. A lot about hunting, the architects, the textile industry and the day to day running of the property. Would recommend you watch the video they offer in the ticket area before walking around as literature in the rooms was less thorough.

Gorgeous Victorian house with incredible gardens. Entry is pricey at 12 pounds per adult, but well worth it if you take your time there. The grounds are fabulous, lots of little walks and trails. The cream tea was a disappointment at the main stable cafe. Adequate for a quick refreshment only.

Boat Moorings & Marinas

Grand Western Canal Country Park

The Moorings/Canal Hill, Tiverton EX16 4HX, UK – 01884 254072

Lovely, level, off-road cycle along the canal. We did the whole route, including a loop of the old railway line at Tiverton, which was 26 miles, but lots of shorter routes possible with good access from car parks along the canal. We started at Lowdwells Lock and rode to Tiverton and back, stopping for a picnic, tea and cake in the Canal Tea Room (nice - see separate review) and a cheeky pint in the pub on the way back. A very easy cycle with lots to see. Care must be taken as the path is shared with walkers, anglers and the horse-drawn barge but it's a scenic route which suits a relaxed pace. A lovely day out.

Lovely little canal, horse boat and fishing location. Loved the canal boat style ice cream seller. Relaxing day with the kids spending chilled time around lovely locals. Also a gorgeous original thatched roof cottage/coffee shop and plenty of payment t Meter parking. Tiverton castle is also close by.

Tiverton Castle

Park Hill, Tiverton EX16 6RP, UK – 01884 255200

So pleased I visited this beautiful place. The gardens were so relaxing and our tour guide was amazing.

Dramatically situated above the river Exe Tiverton Castle is ideally placed for not only visiting Tiverton but also exploring Devon and Somerset. Our apartment at the top of the turret (not for the faint-hearted!) had splendid views and was charming; comfortably furnished and well equipped. Our hosts Alison & Angus were very friendly and hospitable. A traditional Devon cream tea with home made scones was set out to greet us and our free tour of the castle was fascinating. All this and a beautiful garden too make it a very special place to stay.
